Takuzu is a two-symbol logic puzzle also known as Binairo, Binoxxo, binary Sudoku, or the binary puzzle. Traditional boards use zeroes and ones; Paws & Pairs uses cats and dogs so the same reasoning feels warmer and easier to scan.
The goal is not to guess the next symbol. You apply a small set of constraints until every placement is logically forced. Paws & Pairs adds same-or-different links, teaching hints, and a guided Journey for learning the techniques in context.
Learn the three core rules
First, every row and column needs equal numbers of the two symbols. On a six-cell line, that means three cats and three dogs. Second, three identical symbols may never touch in a horizontal or vertical line.
Third, honor every connector. A double line means its two cells must match; an × means they must differ. These local clues often start a chain that resolves a much larger part of the grid.
Make the easiest deductions first
Look for two matching animals with an empty cell immediately before or after them. The empty cell must be the opposite animal to prevent a triple. A matching pair with one gap between them also forces the middle cell to be the opposite symbol.
Then count each line. If a six-cell row already contains three cats, every remaining empty cell in that row must be a dog. Repeat the scan vertically after each placement.
Use links without guessing
If one side of a matching link is known, copy that animal to the other side. If one side of an opposite link is known, place the other animal next to it.
When neither side is known, combine the link with nearby symbols. If one possible assignment would create a triple or overfill a row, the other assignment becomes forced.
